Today, General Motors named Dan Akerman CEO in waiting. The Current CEO, Ed Whitacre, will step down September first. For the moment, let’s forget about Mr Akerman’s lack of manufacturing, retail, and automotive experience and focus solely on the timing of Mr Whitacre’s departure. Why would Mr Whitacre leave just as the company is going public? Mr Whitacre has done a good job with GM’s turnaround. His departure only puts an unneeded cloud over GM’s upcoming IPO. This move adds uncertainty to the IPO and thus hurts tax payers. Once again, the Board of General Motors makes a poorly timed decision.
